Picnic at Jefferson Park

July 3rd, 2025. To launch the summer academy, STEMsub staff and students gathered at Jefferson Park for an exciting outing. This opening event marked the beginning of the program and featured a variety of fun activities, including icebreaker games, human bingo, and a lively round of ultimate rock-paper-scissors. With plenty of yummy food and opportunities to connect, the day offered a relaxed environment for students to meet their peers and get acquainted with program instructors.

Ballard Locks and Woodland Park Zoo

July 9th, 2025. For the first off-campus field trip with STEMsub, students met at the U-District Station to travel to Ballard Locks together. At the Ballard Locks Visitor Center, students were given a tour of the facility and visited their modern innovative Salmon Education Center. After lunch, students and STEMsub staff traveled together for a fun afternoon at the Woodland Park Zoo. UW Tours and Work Days

July 16th, 2025 & August 6, 2025. During week 3 of summer academy, students were given time to work on their projects and assignments while also being offered different departments and labs to tour on the UW campus. Students were invited to the Burke Museum, the Kirsten Wind Tunnel, Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering Reality Lab, and a Tour of Dorm and Residential Life here at UW. During the second half of the program, students were able to have a second work day to complete their projects and assignments. To celebrate the end of the program, many students enjoyed bowling and various activities at the HUB.

Seattle Mariners Baseball Game

July 23rd, 2025. Students gathered with STEMsub staff at the Stadium Station to walk over to T-Mobile Park for a day of fun! They began the morning with a special panelist presentation from a group of professionals working for the Seattle Mariners. With their diverse backgrounds, they share how they use STEM in their everyday jobs. After the panel, students enjoyed a baseball game between Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers!

Seattle Aquarium

July 30th, 2025. For the final off-campus field trip of the summer, our students visited the Seattle Aquarium. Hosted by the aquarium, the day began with a hands-on Plankton Tow activity, an engaging method for collecting plankton using fine-mesh nets, guided by the Seattle Aquarium’s Youth Ocean Advocates (YOA) and examined their findings under microscopes. Students attended guest presentations from experts in the Regenerative Program, Connections Program, and Seattle Aquarium CEO Peggy Sloan. Finally, they explored the aquarium exhibits including the newly constructed Ocean Pavilion.
