Eligibility Requirements

Participant Eligibility

  • UW STEMsub students must attend either Chief Sealth, Cleveland, Foster, or Franklin High Schools in King County, WA.
  • UW STEMsub students apply during their sophomore or junior year and remain in the program through high school graduation.
  • To be eligible, UW STEMsub students must be low-income  (as defined by federal guidelines) and/or potential first generation college students. The regulations for Upward Bound Math Science programs require that two-thirds of the participants in a project must be both low-income and potential first-generation students. The remaining one-third must be either low-income or first-generation college students.
  • UW STEMsub students must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States or be in the United States for other than a temporary purpose and provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of his or her intent to become a permanent resident. Permanent residents of Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or residents of the Freely Associated States—the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, or the Republic of Palau are also eligible.
  • UW STEMsub students must have a need for academic support in order to pursue successfully a program of education beyond high school.
  • Participants should not be currently enrolled in another Federal TRIO Program (Upward Bound or TRIO Talent Search)
  • Selection is also based on teacher recommendations, grades, test scores, and a personal interview.
