David Wolczyk is the Director of the University of Washington Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub) Program. He started in TRIO 20+ years ago as a Tutor and Instructor at Columbia College in Chicago and since then has been an Instructor for the University of Washington Upward Bound (UB) Program and the Science and Technology Coordinator for UW UB and TRIO Training grants. He has taught courses on a wide variety of Science, Technology, and test-prep topics and pioneered the first Computer Assembly and Design course for TRIO students in 2001.
A TRIO Trainer since 1998, he has trained TRIO Staff from around the country on new techniques and best practices for using technology. He was a principal architect of the highly regarded UW TRIO Training online training, and has been a member of the TRIO Quest Advisory Committee since 2000. He studied Biology as an undergraduate, Evolutionary Genetics in graduate school, and spent a year abroad as a Watson Fellow in Europe conducting independent research on Acid Rain. Published works include articles in the Journal of Educational Opportunity, Genetics, and Science.
Dave loves spending his free time with his family or escaping to the mountains for skiing, hiking, cycling, or climbing.
Helen Chyz is the Academic Advisor for UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub). It is her goal that every STEMsub student will graduate high school ready to attend the best fit college for them. This includes not just being accepted to college, but understanding more about the systems of higher education that exist. Helen has experience working in college admissions, where she evaluated student applications, attended college fairs, and even visited some of the STEMsub high schools! She earned a Master’s degree from the University of Washington in Leadership in Higher Education, where she primarily focused on college access and higher education pathways. Helen brings these perspectives to the college prep course which she teaches during Summer Academy. During the school year, she advises students on getting ready for college, applying to colleges, writing skills, and other academic needs.
Outside of the office, she enjoys spending time with her family and her dog, Zoe!
Jana Chieu
Jana Chieu is the Counseling Services Coordinator with UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub) and has been involved with the program since it started, in 2013. As the Counseling Services Coordinator, Jana helps with the day to day operations of the UW STEMsub program. She is an alumna of the first cohort of the UW STEMsub program and graduated from the University of Washington – Bothell campus with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Studies and minors in Health Education & Promotion and Consciousness, Creativity & Science. Jana also has a Master’s degree in Nutrition from The National University of Natural Medicine.
When Jana is not working with UW STEMsub, she enjoys a very active lifestyle partaking in activities such as tennis, hiking, and swimming.
Jonathon Brown is the Curriculum Coordinator with UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub). In this role, Jonathon provides tutoring in math and science and advising to STEMsub students at their high schools. He also teaches classes at the Summer Academy. Jonathon has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville in addition to a Master’s degree in Teaching from Columbia University. He is enthusiastic about making all students feel successful in math and science, and he has had the opportunity to teach all grades from 6-12 across the globe in places like Alaska, New York City, Seattle, and Mozambique.
When not working at UW STEMsub, Jonathon enjoys pickleball, cryptic crosswords, and travel.
Emmy Ngo is a Student Office Assistant for UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub) and has been involved with the program since 2018. Emmy is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Washington studying Computer Science with a minor in Education. As an Office Assistance, she supports the UW MSUB staff on program activities/projects with her background as an alumna of the program.
Emmy enjoys her free time with her dog, having creative photoshoots, or trying new food recipes.
Azeneth (Aze) Flores is a Student Office Assistant for UW STEMsub and has been involved with the program since 2020. Azeneth is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Washington double majoring in Law, Societies, and Justice and Social Work. As an Office Assistant, Azeneth provides support for the UW STEMsub staff as a previous alumna of the program.
In her free time, Azeneth enjoys playing with her dog, watching her favorite shows, and crocheting.
Aaron Banh (he/him) is a Mathematics Instructor and STEM Tutor for UW STEMsub, and this will be his second year with the program. Aaron is a recent graduate from the University of Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and he currently works in film photography at a local photo lab.
Aaron loves spending his free time biking and reading, but not at the same time.
Andrea is a Research Assistant and PhD Student in Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) and a member of the Human-Centered Data Science Lab at University of Washington, Seattle. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Informatics Engineering from Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) in Chile.
Her research interests are focused on Human Centered Data Science and Data Visualization. She’s interested in building tools to help researchers with qualitative and automated analysis of large datasets, supporting discussions to improve inter-rater agreement by creating powerful data visualizations, inter-rater reliability metrics, and algorithms to uncover important information in the process.
Outside of school, she enjoys photography and baking!
Bill Giang is an Undergraduate Program Assistant for UW STEMsub. Bill is a student at Stanford University, class of 2028, pursuing a computer science or related STEM major. He is also a STEMsub alumni, returning as a full-time assistant at the 2025 Summer Academy. Bill will TA for the returning students section, managing technology and online resources, and helping wherever help is needed.
Bill enjoys running long distances, playing video games, and listening to music and concerts.
Casey is a math instructor and has been working with STEMsub since summer 2020!
Erin received her undergraduate degree was in Chemistry through the United States Naval Academy. After graduation she was stationed at Naval Station Everett and moved out to the beautiful Pacific Northwest! After her time in the Navy, Erin returned to graduate school and studied materials for solar cells and LEDs. Erin completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Washington in 2021 and transitioned into teaching 7th grade science. She recently completed her Master’s in Teaching through the University of Washington.
Gust Burns grew up in Tacoma where he participated as a teenager in the city’s amazing music and graffiti scenes of the 1990s, playing jazz, punk, and rap music. He has lived in Seattle since 2001, where he makes work as a theorist and researcher in the critical humanities, continues to work as a musician, and teaches English. Gust is revising his first book manuscript, titled Against Aesthetic Prohibition: (antiblack) multiplicity and radical Black aesthetics, and currently teaches at Edmonds College. He is a father and a husband.
Héctor Delgado Díaz is the 2025 Astronomy/Section Instructor for the UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub). He is a Ph.D. candidate in the dual-title program of Astronomy and Astrobiology. He also holds a Master’s in Astronomy from UW, a Master’s in Physics from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor’s in General Sciences from Universidad de Puerto Rico en Cayey. This is his first time teaching for UW STEMsub; however, he has previously taught at the high school level, and his goal is to become a professor after completing his doctoral degree. He hopes to return to Puerto Rico, where he will collaborate with other astronomers to establish the first undergraduate astronomy program on the island.
Outside of academia, Héctor enjoys doing embroidery projects, playing video games, learning new languages, and going to the beach.
Jasper is a STEMsub summer instructor specializing in Data Visualization. They graduated from the University of Washington in 2023 with a degree in Informatics (Data Science) and a minor in French. In addition to teaching at STEMsub, they work as an intervention reading and math tutor at Leschi Elementary and guest lecture for INFO 474: Interactive Information Visualization at UW.
Outside of work, Jasper is also a creative writer and recently self-published their first novel, Mirror, Mirror. They are also a committed advocate for the trans and LGBTQ+ community. Their Informatics Capstone project, thread4thread—a prototype clothing exchange app for Seattle’s trans community—received the iSchool’s IDEAS award.
John Odudele is a college prep instructor at UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub). This is John’s first summer with the program. He recently graduated with a Master’s in Applied Linguistics from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is an incoming PhD in English and Literature at the University of Washington.
John has extensive experience teaching academic reading and writing to diverse students. Before teaching English as a second language in the United States for three years, John taught in his home country, Nigeria, and in Istanbul, Turkey.
His research interests focused on race, power, and inequity in language education. He’s interested in the role race and native speaker status play in the lives of Black African English Teachers in the Middle East, especially Turkey.
Aside from academia, he enjoys long walks, reading and writing, listening to music, and trying new restaurants.
Joseph Bringman is teaching Latin for UW STEMsub Summer Academy 2025. He completed his PhD in Classics at the University of Washington in 2024 and is currently a lecturer in the Classics Department. During his time at UW, Joseph has taught multiple Latin courses at all levels, and he is excited to share his love of Latin with STEMsub students this summer.
Outside of teaching, Joseph enjoys learning new languages, watching Jeopardy!, studying Aristotelian philosophy, and writing novels set in the ancient world.
Julian is excited to join the UW Math Science Upward Bound (UW STEMsub) program as the 2025 Animal Physiology elective instructor. Julian completed a BS in Cellular Biology and Biochemistry at UC San Diego before completing an MS in Ecology at Colorado State University, where he researched honeybees. Having previously taught biology courses at Seattle University and the University of Washington, Julian is a passionate STEM educator excited to broaden his teaching audience to high school students through the Upward Bound program.
In his free time, you can find Julian backpacking, snowboarding, playing soccer, or curling up with a good book and reading to his beloved cat, Tomato.
Nathan Cheung is an upcoming 5th year graduate student in the math department at UW. He got his undergraduate degree in applied math at UCLA. Nathan hopes to use his degrees to teach at a community college or smaller university and has had the opportunity to teach a few math classes at UW like advanced multivariable calculus as well as linear algebra. This will be his first year working with STEMsub’s summer program!
In his free time Nathan enjoys hanging with friends, driving out to find waves or fresh snow, and watching Dodgers, Chargers or Atletico Madrid games.
Nicole Gregorio is a Section Instructor for UW STEMsub for Summer 2025. She completed her Ph.D. in Bioengineering at UW this past year, working to create protein-based hydrogels for use in therapeutic delivery. Previously, she completed her B.S. in Biochemistry at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA.
Outside of the lab, Nicole loves teaching, is passionate about science communication, and enjoys knitting and cross stitching in her free time!
