Picnic at Jefferson Park
July 12th, 2023. Students were joined by STEMsub staff at Jefferson Park for the first field trip of summer academy. The first field trip served as a kick-off for the summer program and included games, ultimate rock-paper-scissors, human bingo, various icebreakers, and delicious food. This field trip is always a fun way to get to know their fellow classmates as well as some of their instructors.
King County Superior Courthouse
July 19th, 2023. During the 2nd week, students gathered in Downtown Seattle at the King County Superior Courthouse where they listened to various professionals with different jobs in the legal system and at the courthouse. After lunch, they were given time to observe trials or hearings that were scheduled at the court that day. To wrap-up, students had in-depth discussion with Judge Adrienne McCoy and Bailiff Joy Stransky about our legal system.
Seattle Aquarium
July 19th & August 16th, 2023. With a behind the scenes tour with Aquarium staff and full access to browse the main exhibit, students were able to learn more about the Aquarium’s animal collection, housed within six major exhibits: Window on Washington Waters, Life on the Edge, Pacific Coral Reef, Birds & Shores, the Underwater Dome and Marine Mammals.
Microsoft Redmond Campus
July 26th, 2023. During this week, half of our students visited the main Microsoft campus located in Redmond. They began with an informational tour about Xbox User Research observing the spaces they use for user testing. Following this tour was a panel of Microsoft employees sharing their experiences and pathways into the industry. After lunch, the group was divided into 4 groups for career workshops. And lastly, the trip ended with a networking session with interns and professionals with various roles at Microsoft.
Seattle University and Clinical Performance Lab
July 26th, 2023. Week 3 of summer academy, we had a second group of the students visit Seattle University (SU). They met at Cherry Hill Swedish Medical Center to visit the Nursing Clinical Performance Lab. Following lunch, there was an info session with the Seattle University Admissions and a campus tour to close off the trip.
UW Tours
August 2nd, 2023. Halfway through the summer academy, students were given time to work on their projects and assignments while also being offered different departments and labs to tour on the UW campus. Students visited the Kirsten Wind Tunnel, UW Residential Dorms, Northwest Genomics Center, Center for Ecosystems Sentinels, Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center and Instructional Center.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association
August 9th, 2023. At the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), students were given an introduction to what NOAA facilities along with opportunities to get involved with the association while in high school. Afterward, the students welcomed different professionals that work for NOAA in a career panel and Q&A. Before ending the trip, the students took an oceanography tour.
Allen Institute
August 16th, 2023. The Allen Institute is an independent nonprofit bioscience research institute aimed at unlocking the mysteries of human biology through foundational science that fuels the discovery of new treatments and cures. We were pleased to offer this trip to our students. After checking in at the Allen Institute, our students were given a building tour followed by a career panel with four scientists at the facility. Before having lunch from Halal Guys, the students were able to partake in an interactive activity with Fluorescent Microscopy to learn more about the projects they work on at the Allen Institute.
NAPE Center
August 16th, 2023. On our last week of summer academy, students visited the Center of Excellence in Neurobiology of Addiction, Pain, and Emotion (NAPE) right here at UW. The Center coordinates research and training activities of faculty researchers in Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry performing basic research in addiction, pain and mood disorders. After arriving to the Health Sciences Education Building, the students learned more about NAPE through an introduction and later rotated around stations with scientists and researchers to learn about their work.
