The mission of UW STEMsub (Math Science Upward Bound) is to help low income and potential first-generation college students succeed in high school, get accepted to college and STEM majors, and graduate with a STEM degree.

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY IF YOU:
  • Are a 10th or 11th grader from Cleveland, Franklin, Chief Sealth, or Foster High Schools;
  • Are motivated to go to college and are interested in pursuing a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) or the Medical/Health Care field;
  • Are the first generation in their family to earn a 4-year college degree and/or come from a low-income family. Most students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch are eligible;
  • Are a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Residents not already participating in another Upward Bound or TRIO Talent Search Program.
 
APPLICATION COMPONENTS:

1. Submit Online Application

–The online application has 7 sections:  Student Information, School Information, Family Information, Income Eligibility, Written Response, Teacher Recommendations, and Certification & Signatures.

2. Income Information

–If the student is accepted to the program, a signed Copy of a parent/guardian’s Tax Form or Income Verification will be required. 

3. Written Response

–As part of the Online Application, all applicants must respond to the following writing prompt using a maximum of 500 words (typically about 1 page, double-spaced):

Why do you want to participate in the UW STEMsub program, and how can the program help you reach your academic, career, and personal goals?

In your essay, consider your strengths, goals and ambitions, and what excites you about the program. Since every student we serve must have a clear need for the program, it is important to discuss your personal challenges and areas you need to improve.

4. Recommendation from a Math/Science Teacher (Required) and a 2nd recommendation from your counselor or another teacher/staff member from your school. 

–You will be asked to provide the name and email of a Math or Science Teacher from your school to complete a recommendation form on your behalf. Be sure to ask your teacher and verify their email address before submitting the application.
