Picnic at Jefferson Park

July 5th, 2024. Students were joined by STEMsub staff at Jefferson Park for the first field trip of summer academy. The first field trip served as a kick-off for the summer program and included games, ultimate rock-paper-scissors, human bingo, various icebreakers, and delicious food. This field trip is always a fun way to get to know their fellow classmates as well as some of their instructors.

July 10th, 2024. During the 2nd week, students gathered in Seattle Center at Climate Pledge Arena for an exciting game of WNBA Seattle Storm versus Las Vegas Aces. Our students were joined by other youth groups as it was Kids Day!


iFly Indoor Skydiving

July 17th, 2024. Our students visited iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Tukwila where they had an interactive STEM presentation delivered by an iFLY STEM Educator. They were given physics lessons and demonstrations in the wind tunnel to compare their predicted terminal velocity with their actual measured speed from their instructed flying time from a highly-trained and certified instructor.


UW Tours

July 24th & August 7th, 2024. Halfway through the summer academy, students were given time to work on their projects and assignments while also being offered different departments and labs to tour on the UW campus. Students visited were able to get an admissions tour of the university, watch a show at the Planetarium, tour facilities at the College of Built Environments, and tour the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering Fabrication Lab. During the second half of the program, students were able to have a second work day to complete their projects and assignments. To celebrate the end of the program, many students enjoyed bowling and various activities at the HUB.


Recology

July 31st, 2024. On this day, half of our students gathered at Seattle’s Industrial District for a tour of the Recology Waste Zero facility that collects and manages King County’s waste to turn into reusable material. They got to tour the facility and take a look at how Recology sorts and manages the waste that comes in daily as well as receive a presentation on how to properly recycle and sort their waste at home. They also got to meet an artist that works for the Artist in Residence program that uses recycled material to create art and sculptures.


King 5 News Station

July 31st, 2024. Students were given a behind the scenes tour of the news at King 5 where they were able to watch the news live from the control room and see how producers and directors run the news from behind the scenes. They also even had the chance to chat with a news anchor and meteorologist! Our students were also able to hear how reporters and journalists get their news and pitch their storied from an executive producer.
