KCIA is recruiting for one (1) high school-level intern in the Innovation Section. See below for details for the position.

Summary

The responsibilities of the CAD & GIS Applications Intern include performing entry-level engineering technical services with mentorship and guidance from the Innovation Designer Solutions Analyst, reporting to the Innovation Section Manager. Specific engineering tasks may include GIS data editing, digitizing, map creation, drafting drawings from notes and sketches, taking field measurements, and assisting with engineering records management. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of airport layout and operations.

Job Duties

  • Provide basic graphic, drafting and mapping support including field measurements and sketching 
  • Draft engineering drawings from notes and sketches using manual or Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems; update and revise existing drawings 
  • Incorporate markups into drawings under the direction of lead or supervisor 
  • Perform basic research of hardware and equipment and basic mathematical calculations 
  • Maintain drawing filing supplies and records; prepare drawing sets for internal and external distribution 
  • Assist in organizing and verifying consultant/contractors project documents 
  • Verify and compile the necessary documentation for engineering requests 
  • Gather data for engineering and related projects; analyze data and basemap drawings as assigned 
  • Research King County International Airport/Boeing Field projects to assemble for Archives and Engineering Records to organize as assigned 
  • Perform limited or basic engineering calculations 
  • Perform general office support and maintain records for assigned work unit 
  • Respond to inquiries from airport staff and consultants regarding work 
  • GIS data collection, field work, and/or projects 
  • Airport applications data collection, QA/QC, and/or reporting 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Enrolled or experienced with AutoCAD applications
  • Basic familiarity of aviation and engineering functions 
  • Knowledge of basic drafting techniques and principles 
  • Skill in using software such as AutoCAD for measuring and determining distances 
  • Familiarity of Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel 
  • Familiarity with map types, google earth imagery and street addresses 
  • Graphical detail-oriented skills 
  • Oral and written communications skills 
  • Passionate and willing to work in a team environment

Supplemental Information

Work Location

This position will be hybrid with onsite at the Airport Terminal Building and telecommuting.

Schedule

Up to two-year internship starting a week after the 2025 school year. Part-time/Full-time hours: 20 – 40 hours per week depending on student’s availability per their school schedule. High school students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week during the school year. During the summer, high school students may work up to 40 hours a week.
