City of Seattle High School Intern – Career Explorations

This position is designed to provide meaningful work experiences and career exposure to the field of recreation for youth ages 15 – 21. In this position, youth will participate in a structured curriculum of work-based learning experiences that encourage youth to explore and experiment in different areas of parks and recreation. Career Explorations has four focus areas, recreation, event planning, nutritional education and fitness education.

Program dates:
Winter/ Spring  – Priority application date is February 21, 2024

  • Internship- March 9 -April 27 
  • Internship – July 1 – August 24

Spring/Summer: Note that not all focus areas are available during every session as they rotate throughout the year. Youth can apply to participate in multiple sessions.

What Special Working Conditions will this position have? 

  • Perform demanding and physically challenging work, including lifting more than 50 pounds to waist level. 
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Meet the conditions set forth in SPR Workplace Expectations.
  • Must have ability to be transported in city vehicles.

What will the internship program consist of?

Internship requirements 

  • Weekly 1 on 1 Mentoring (Virtual)  
  • Weekly Group check in  
  • Schedule for work as assistant with Rec leader for up to 60 hours per session 
  • Completion of the appropriate culminating project  

    Job Responsibilities

    Dependent upon the track participating in: 

    • Monitor Outdoor Activation and Mobile Recreation (OAMR) programs and activities under direct supervision of assigned recreation leader to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
    • Assist in preparing and maintaining records of recreational activities, sports, fitness, wellness classes and special events.
    • Assist in preparing and distribution of brochures and other forms of publication and advertisements for the public.
    • Assist in conducting recreational activities, sports, fitness, wellness classes and special events.
    • Maintains equipment, supplies and work environment in a safe and sanitary condition.
    • Attendance and participation in weekly work-related trainings.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Prior completion of Career Explorers Program Track or other SPR pre-employment training program.
    • Must be aged 15-21 years old by beginning of chosen session. 
    • Ability to reach assigned community worksite. 

    Desired Qualifications

    • Willingness and openness to commit to a learning environment. 
    • Strong reading, verbal and written communication skills
    • Previous participation in organized sports or competitive team
    • Prior participation in Seattle Parks & Recreation programming
    • Ability to communicate in a language other than English.
